Castletown Abbey B [9] versus Kirk Michael B [8]
Last Tuesday night PwC Castletown Abbey (CA) B took on Kirk Michael (KM) B. Both sides were on good form and the night stayed close throughout, with home side, CA, inching in front at the very end to take a 9-8 game victory.
Level doubles were shared equally between the two teams, Men's going to CA, Women's to KM. CA 2nd Women, Sue Rossouw/Harriet Quayle, both reserves, did well against the more experienced pair of Ali Callister/Lindsey Hotchkiss, taking more than half points in both their games.
CA 1st Men Nick Thornley/Damian Peter had to keep play tight and attacking to get the better of Brian Drew/Ed Espinosa, the scores being level into the late stages of both games, making it a battle of nerves, particularly on service where any loose delivery was quickly punished.
At the midway point it was 4 games a piece.
O'Meara's speed around the court enabled Quayle to play a more focused game, their 4th mixed against Jamie Everitt/Hotchkiss was quickly taken, 21-13, 21-10.
3rd Mixed was much tighter, KM pair Alan Murphy/Callister took some time to find ways to push Graham Coffey/Rossouw out of position and dominate the attacking play, the 19-21 of the first game could easily have gone the other way, but by the second game KM became more comfortable taking it 14-21.
KM 2nd Mixed Espinosa/Jo Moore couldn't find a good answer to Damian Peter/Asia Ogden, the games going 21-15, 21-10.
The final match of the evening was fittingly tense, CA's Thornley/Clare Townsend needing to play at their very best just to keep in touch with Drew/Jess Corlett, narrowly loosing the first end 17-21, but turning it around in the second 21-18 to take it to three. In the end it was CA who broke first allowing KM to take the final game 14-21.
Nominated players of the match were Nick Thornley and Brian Drew.
